Sorry Colts fans, but it was all about the money. Jim Caldwell and president Bill Polian weren’t lying to the Jets all week in the spirit of competetive advantage. They were lying to YOU. When they told you that only injured starters would get a rest, it wasn’t a ploy to spring secret offensive weapon Curtis Painter on them. It was a ploy to have you show up and spend your hard earned money at a game that they had secretly deemed meaningless. While you were hoping for an undefeated season and your place in the record books, they were hoping you would show up for a game they cared nothing about winning and buy $8 beers and $6 pizza slices. That you did. It was all about the money.

After his resignation was announced by athletic director Jeremy Foley, Urban’s first interview was, fittingly, with his friend Pete Thamel of the New York Times. In that interview, Meyer said that when his daughter hugged him after he informed his family of his decision, he “saw it as a sign from God that this was the right thing to do.” He also said that his 16-year-old daughter told him that she had not felt as if she had talked to him in the past two years. Well, apparently they did some serious catching up over the next few hours because now Urban has decided to ignore God’s sign and will take a leave of absence rather than resign. It will be very interesting to see what his ultimate decision is after current recruits are bound by their letters of intent.

Late Saturday, University of Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley confirmed to the media that head coach Urban Meyer was resigining his position effective at the end of the Allstate Sugar Bowl. In related news, a completely unreliable source confirmed to us that new Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly could be seen standing on one leg in the corner of his office repeatedly kicking himself square in the ass.
Trail flashing gang sign on recruiting visit
Last week, 13psi broke the story about the Florida Gators’ football recruiting class including a known member of a Miami street gang. This is a gang that has been involved in several drive-by shootings over the past few years in the Overtown area of Miami. A teammate and fellow gang member of Lynden Trail’s was murdered in a drive-by shooting before Booker T. Washington’s season began this year. The shooting was in retaliation for a similar drive-by committed the previous day by a member of Trail’s gang.
A writer for Sports Illustrated picked up on the story and interviewed Mr. Trail. In that brief interview, Lynden flatly denied being in a gang and claimed that the gang sign he was pictured flashing was merely a “neighborhood” sign. Laughable. After more research, 13psi published a follow-up article detailing Mr. Trail’s association with this street gang, including more proof that he is not as innocent as he claimed. Only after this was published did Lynden Trail admit that he was involved, although the way the question was posed to him made it sound like it was a distant memory. At left, he is pictured flashing his gang sign while on a recent recruiting visit in Gainesville. Continue reading Gator Admits Gang Ties
 Men's Fitness, August 2007
Does Tiger seem to be grimacing on this magazine cover? Like he wants to go all “Elin” with that golf club? Let’s just say that from this point forward we all have reason to suspect that any famous athlete on the cover of Men’s Fitness has been photographed committing unholy acts in a car at his local church parking lot. According to the Wall Street Journal, Tiger was coerced into doing the photo shoot and in depth interview two years ago because the magazine’s sister company, The National Enquirer, had incriminating photos of Tiger and his extra-marital selection of the day getting to know each other in a biblical sense. Really, how could I resist that?
That month’s issue sold 30% more copies than average and Tiger bought himself two more years of un-published skirt chasing. A win-win.

S.I.’s Andy Staples interviewed the two Florida Gators’ commitments who were pictured wearing bandannas over their faces and flashing what looked to be gang signs in a previous post. Both maintain that they were incorrectly depicted by the photos. Of themselves. That they posted. Gator recruit Lynden Trail said that the sign he was flashing in the photo wasn’t a “gang” sign, merely a “neighborhood” sign. So let’s take their word for it and chalk it up as a couple of people being immature and trying to act “gangsta.” The problem is perception. Mr. Trail enhanced this perception by placing the caption “BIRD GANG BITCH” under the photo of himself displaying his Continue reading Rough “Neighborhood”
I like the larger bills on the outside
Urban Meyer said on Tuesday that he wasn’t sure if suspended defensive lineman Carlos Dunlap would be allowed to play in the Gators’ bowl game, adding that university president Bernie Machen and athletic director Jeremy Foley will be in on the decision. Sounds like Urban has had his disciplinary powers taken away as a result of the embarrassment caused by his 1/2 suspension of starting linebacker Brandon Spikes for gouging an opposing player’s eyes. From the looks of the Gators’ recruiting class, maybe Machen and Foley need to get involved in recruiting, too. Pictured at left with the gun and what looks to be about $16 (dinner for two at Wendy’s) is Leon Orr, 6-4 295lb defensive lineman commitment and “collect money cartel” member. Pictured below with what appear to be gang signs are Orr and DE Lynden Trail, Florida commitments. How can this not turn out well for the Gators? UPDATE on this story Continue reading Who Are The Gators Recruiting?
Just thought we would share in the irony of Pete Thamel “following the Gators”…

New York Times sports reporter Pete Thamel ”broke” the story of the NCAA’s investigation into Tennessee’s football recruiting practices. After inititial investigation into his story, there seems to be a stink arising from little Pahokee, Fla., which drifts over to Gainesville and all the way north to a couple of offices in mid-town Manhattan.

 Seriously....What?
Eight time Pro-Bowl tight end Shannon Sharpe parlayed a stellar 14 year NFL career into a commentator gig with CBS Sports. He sat down with us on Tuesday for a little Q&A.
