Trail flashing gang sign on recruiting visit

Last week, 13psi broke the story about the Florida Gators’ football recruiting class including a known member of a Miami street gang. This is a gang that has been involved in several drive-by shootings over the past few years in the Overtown area of Miami. A teammate and fellow gang member of Lynden Trail’s was murdered in a drive-by shooting before Booker T. Washington’s season began this year. The shooting was in retaliation for a similar drive-by committed the previous day by a member of Trail’s gang.

A writer for Sports Illustrated picked up on the story and interviewed Mr. Trail. In that brief interview, Lynden flatly denied being in a gang and claimed that the gang sign he was pictured flashing was merely a “neighborhood” sign. Laughable. After more research, 13psi published a follow-up article detailing Mr. Trail’s association with this street gang, including more proof that he is not as innocent as he claimed. Only after this was published did Lynden Trail admit that he was involved, although the way the question was posed to him made it sound like it was a distant memory. At left, he is pictured flashing his gang sign while on a recent recruiting visit in Gainesville.

So the question now is, what will Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley do? This decision falls into his lap because head coach Urban Meyer has displayed a lack of  judgement in this area during his tenure at Florida, and there is no reason to believe that he has suddenly developed a keen sense of right vs wrong.  Here is a kid that lied to the public about his gang association and when pressed to confess, he attempted to excuse this behavior by saying that a) everyone in his area is in a gang, and b) he never has carried a gun. The former is definitely not the truth and we can’t be sure about the latter as Mr. Trail is already on record as having lied about his gang activities. Does Foley want to add a character like this to a program that, under Urban’s watch, has been rocked by athletes’ criminal activities and a perceived lack of discipline thereof? Only time will tell.

Interesting that the SI article tries to make it sound like it was only in middle school, yet he is flashing the gang sign on a recent visit to Florida’s campus? I smell a T-H-U-G.

  • In the NFL, players are punished for poor conduct. This is because the league doesn’t want to present a poor image to the customers. I understand this is about a recruit, but it is a follow-up to Dunlaps DUI foolishness. College football is allowing these situations of unpunished lawless acts to taint the product and alienate the fans. The question is simple. Do you accept lesser talent and focus on character, or do you open the gates and let the best criminals come on in? This is just one example of poor management. Whether it be the thugs being recruited, the players taking money on the side, or the bowls picking for the best payout; teams are operated on the sole basis of winning. The few SEC teams that do have morals and standards are being dragged down by this embarrassment of a team. Until the playing field is leveled and the SEC/NCAA/ESPN mafias are cleaned out, this is just another example of double standards for a chosen school. Is minning really worth all this?

Wow! There sure are a lot of people out there who hate to see a young man be successful at something. When is all the hating going to stop. From someone whose known this guy for a very long time, I can assure you that he’s way to smart of a person to let people like you affect his success. So I say to you all stop hating because he’s got the chance for something great that you wish you had…GO GATORS!!!!!
